SOLEMNIZATION OF MARRIAGE

1. If the solemnization took place in Greece:

Required documents:
– A Religious marriage certificate issued by the officiating priest.
– A valid identification document or passport is necessary.

It is registered by a) one of the spouses b) by a duly authorized third party; by means of notarized Special Power of Attorney c) by a lawyer duly authorized; by means of notarized Special Power of Attorney.

2. If the solemnization took place abroad:

2.1. If you have a marriage registration document issued by the Greek Consulate:

Required documents:
– The document by the Greek Consulate
– A valid identification document or passport is necessary.

The marriage is registered at the Special Civil Registry Section:  a) by either of the spouses or b) by a duly authorized third party; such authorization must be certified by ΚΕΠ1 or the Greek Consulate c) by a qualified lawyer duly authorized; such authorization must be certified by ΚΕΠ or the Greek Consulate d) by any person who has a legitimate interest.

2.2. If you have a marriage certificate issued by the Church:

Required documents:
– Original marriage certificate issued by the Church, officially translated in Greek2, and certified by the respective Church authority in Athens3.
– If the registration takes place between the 90th and 180th day a fee of 5.40 euro is required to be paid at the Public Financial Service (Δ.Ο.Υ) or the fee can be paid through eparavolo code number 3826 for 5.40 Euros.
If the registration takes place after 180 days from the birth, a fee 15.60 euro is required to be paid at the local Public Financial Service (Δ.Ο.Υ) or the fee can be paid through eparavolo code number 3827 for 15.60 Euros.
– A valid identification card or passport is necessary.

It is registered a) by one of the spouses b) by a duly authorized third party; by means of notarized Special Power of Attorney c) by a lawyer duly authorized; by means of notarized Special Power of Attorney.

In case of a registered religious marriage which is followed by a civil union, the last one is registered on the religious marriage document. For civil marriages conducted in Greece, a report on civil marriage may also be prepared by the Registrar which will be mailed to the Special Civil Registry Section.

[3] The certificate by the church must be certified by the respective Church Authorities in Greece (eg. for a Christian orthodox marriage the signature is certified by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece (Ιasiou 1, Μoni Petraki tel:  210 7272213)).
