Registering BAPTISMS at the Special Civic Registry
1. If the baptism took place in Greece:
Required documents:
– The Baptism certificate by the officiating priest who administered the baptism.
NOTE: If the registration of the baptism concerns a baptism that took place before 27/4/2013 a fee of 13 Euros +20% is required = 15.60 Euros. (The fee is paid at the Public Financial Service (Δ.Ο.Υ) or the fee can be paid through eparavolo https://www1.gsis.gr/sgsisapps/eparavolo/public/welcome.htm code number 3827 for 15.60 Euros.
– The applicant must have a valid identification document or passport to declare the birth.
The baptism may be declared at the Special Civic Registry a) by the parents b) by the interested person itself, if he/she is 14 years of age c) by a third-degree relative d) by the godparent, e) by a duly authorized third party or lawyer; by means of a notarized Special Power of Attorney1 f) by any person who has a legitimate interest.
NOTE: A baptism may also be registered at the Greek Registrar of the municipality where the Baptism took place (No fee; also known as a Baptism Report).
2. If the baptism took place abroad:
2.1 Birth registration document issued by a Greek Consulate:
– The baptism is registered on the birth registration document issued by the Consular Authorities and it is submitted to the Special Civil Registry.
– The applicant must have a valid identification document or passport.
2.2 Baptism Certificate issued by the Church:
Required documents:
– The original baptism or Birth-Baptism certificate issued by the Greek Orthodox Church abroad (If in a language other than Greek the certificate must be officially translated in Greek).
– The original baptism or Birth-Baptism Certificate must be certified by the respective Church Authority in Athens. (Moni Petraki, Iasiou 1 Athens– behind the metro station Evaggelismos).

NOTE: If the Baptism is issued by other Church/dogma it must be certified by respective Church Authorities in Greece.
SPECIAL NOTE: If a name was given at the time of birth different from the name given at the baptism (naming), this name cannot change with the baptism, because the naming may not be revoked. Any change may only take place by a judicial decision.
[1] Official translation: a) the document can be translated and certified by the Consulate or b) the document can be translated in Greece by the Section of Translations (Arionos 10 and Ermou- Monastiraki) or c) by a Greek qualified lawyer.
